Men’s Volleyball Falls to UC-Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (January 11, 2006) – Senior setter/outside hitter Chris Bock (Empangeri, Republic South Africa) registered a team-high 16 kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team suffered a 27-30, 30-27, 22-30, 17-30 loss to the University of California-Santa Cruz (2-1) on Wednesday evening at West Field House in Santa Cruz, Calif.  After opening the season with a 3-0 victory over Medaille College on Tuesday, Stevens has lost two straight matches to drop to 1-2 overall.

Freshman middle hitter Andrew Cranford (Bel Air, Md.) tallied 11 kills while hitting a team-best .625 (11-1-16) against the Slugs.  Junior setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) chipped in with 37 assists and five blocks for the Ducks.  Freshman outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.) added 10 kills in the match.

UC-Santa Cruz had five players pick up 10 or more kills against the Ducks.  Sophomore outside hitter Bryan Shires (San Diego, Calif.) led the way with 17 kills.  Senior setter Matt Reynolds (La Habra, Calif.) had 61 assists.

The Slugs out-hit Stevens .291 (68-29-134) to .163 (47-26-129) in the match.
