Stoner Leads Men’s Volleyball to 3-0 Victory over Baruch

Scott Stoner had 18 kills and 13 digs in a 3-0 win over Baruch.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 22, 2006) – Junior middle/outside hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) registered a match-high 18 kills to go along with 13 digs and three blocks as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball picked up its fourth straight win with a 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 victory over No. 15 Baruch College on Wednesday at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.  Stoner hit .552 (18-2-29) and collected a team-high 21.5 points as the seventh-ranked Ducks improved to 14-7 on the year.

Junior middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) added 11 kills in the match while hitting .318 (11-4-22).  Freshman outside hitter/setter Joe Trinsey (Wilmington, Del.) chipped in with 11 kills and six digs.  Senior setter/outside hitter Chris Bock (Empangeri, Republic of South Africa) led the way with 44 assists to go along with seven digs.  Freshman middle hitter Andrew Cranford (Bel Air, Md.) hit a remarkable .800 with eight kills and no attack errors in 10 total attempts.

For Baruch (17-4), junior outside/opposite hitter Greg Waldvogel (West Hempstead, N.Y.) had a team-high 13 kills and four digs.  Senior setter King Cheng (Great Neck, N.Y.) tallied 36 assists and five digs.  Senior outside hitter William Miranda (Minais-Gerias, Brazil) added eight kills and six digs.  The Bearcats only hit .150 (41-24-113) as a team.

Tied at 15-all in the first game, the Ducks scored six unanswered points to take a 21-15 lead.  Foley started the run with a kill.  Following an attack error by Baruch, Trinsey produced a kill.  Stoner followed with an ace.  After another kill by Foley, Stoner served his second ace of the match as Stevens took control.  Trinsey finished the game off with a kill after the Bearcats had clawed back to within two points (29-27).

In the second game, Stevens fell behind 10-5 before rallying to knot the score at 15-all.  Tied at 26-26, the Ducks scored four of the final five points of the game as Stoner strung together back-to-back kills.  Following an attack error by junior middle blocker Steven Rouse (New York, N.Y.), Trinsey finished off the game with a kill.

The third game was tight once again as the teams battled to a 26-26 score.  Stevens captured the game by scoring four of the final five points.  Stoner gave the Ducks a one-point lead with his 17th kill of the match.  After two more attack errors by the Bearcats, Stoner finished off the contest with his final kill of the evening.

Stevens will be back in action on Friday when the Ducks host Division I Princeton University at 7 p.m.
