Men’s Volleyball Claims 3-0 Victory over Bard

Steven Strollo collected 17 assists in the third game to help lead the Ducks to a 3-0 victory over Bard on Monday.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 21, 2006) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team capped a perfect 14-0 regular season in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division with an impressive 30-13, 30-19, 30-21 victory over Bard College on Tuesday evening at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.  The Ducks, who have won three straight matches (all by 3-0 margins), improved to 23-10 on the year with the victory.

Senior setter/outside hitter Chris Bock (Empangeri, Republic of South Africa) led the way with 12 kills and four digs.  Bock hit .556 (12-2-18) in the match.  Meanwhile, freshman outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.) contributed eight kills while committing only two attack errors in 15 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .400.  Bochicchio had five digs against the Raptors.

The Ducks also received solid contributions out of junior outside hitter Sean Whelan (Springfield, Mass.), sophomore setter Steven Strollo (Nesconset, N.Y.) and freshman middle hitter Andrew Cranford (Bel Air, Md.).  Whelan posted six kills while hitting .556 (6-1-9).  Strollo had 17 assists in the third game alone.  Cranford finished with six kills, four digs, four total blocks and three service aces while attacking at an .857 (6-0-7) clip.

Bard (16-11, 6-7 NECVA Metro) was led by freshman opposite Luke Bolton (Durango, Colo.), who had five kills and two block assists.  Junior setter Dylan Cummins (Aptos, Calif.) finished with a team-high 14 assists.  Sophomore middle blocker Vincent Lechowick (Los Angeles, Calif.) added five kills for the Raptors.

All 16 players on the Stevens roster played as the Ducks hit .390 (45-13-82) as a team.  Bard managed a -.078 (18-24-77) hitting percentage.

Stevens will close out the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Division I Sacred Heart University at 1 p.m.  The Ducks will then compete in the opening round of the NECVA Tournament at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., on March 31.
