HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 25, 2006) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball rolled to an impressive 30-12, 30-25, 30-17 victory over Division I Sacred Heart University on Saturday at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks, who have won four straight matches by identical 3-0 scores, improved to 24-10 on the year with the victory.
Junior middle/outside hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) led all players with 11 kills to go along with seven digs. Stoner hit .435 with only one attack error in 23 total attempts. Junior setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) added a match-high 23 assists.
On Senior Day at Stevens, the Ducks received solid performances out of all three of their seniors. Outside hitter Greg Higgins (Kenmore, N.Y.) collected seven kills, four digs and two service aces. Setter/outside hitter Chris Bock (Empangeri, Republic of South Africa) tallied six kills and eight digs. Middle/outside hitter Christian Latoja (Jersey City, N.J.) chipped in with three kills, two service aces and two digs. Latoja hit .400 (3-1-5) for the Ducks.
Sacred Heart (1-14) received six kills and five digs from junior outside hitter Brian Rosa (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.). Senior middle hitter/opposite John Breen (North Andover, Mass.) added six kills and 12 assists. Sophomore setter/libero Dan DuVall (Poolesville, Md.) finished with 12 assists.
Stevens, which earned a 3-1 win over the Pioneers on February 1 in Fairfield, Conn., will compete in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Tournament next weekend. The 16-team, single-elimination tourney will take place at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., from Friday through Sunday.
