PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (September 27, 2006) – Following a one-week layoff between dual matches, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team returned to the court in fine fashion on Wednesday as the Ducks posted a 9-0 victory over St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, N.Y. With the win, Stevens improved to 3-0 on the year and ran its record to 2-0 in the Skyline Conference.
Fresh off her appearance in the finals of the 2006 ITA Northeast Regional over the weekend, junior Dana Bacalla (Portland, Ore.) picked up her 10th singles win of the season as she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position over senior Colleen Fitzgerald (Rocky Point, N.Y.) of St. Joseph’s (3-1, 1-1 Skyline). Sophomore Whitney Bender (Tijeras, N.M.) followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at second singles, while sophomore Rebecca Ryba (Old Brookville, N.Y.) was challenged in her match against sophomore Melissa Carlin (Connetquot, N.Y.) before pulling out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory.
In her second career match, freshman Tiffany Jow (Aberdeen, N.J.) claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth singles. Junior Jacqueline Carbone (Basking Ridge, N.J.) evened her singles record at 3-3 on the year with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over junior Marie Davi (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Junior Vandita Shah (Bloomfield, N.J.) won in straight-sets at sixth singles (6-3, 6-0).
At No. 1 doubles, Bacalla and Jow posted an 8-5 victory. Bender and Ryba defeated sophomore Jessica McDonald (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Carlin by the score of 8-0 at second doubles. Carbone and Shah rolled to an 8-1 win in the third flight.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. match against Ramapo College in Hoboken, N.J.
