SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. (January 13, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team completed its trip to the West Coast with wins over D’Youville College and New York University on Saturday afternoon on the campus of University of California-Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, Calif. In the first match of the day, the Ducks defeated D’Youville (30-24, 30-25, 23-30, 36-34). In the next match-up, Stevens swept NYU in three games (30-28, 30-27, 30-27). With the two wins, Stevens improved to 5-3 on the year.
Against the Spartans, sophomore outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.) led the Ducks again in hitting percentage with a .279 and a team-high 20 kills. He also chipped in with 10 digs in four games. Sophomore middle hitter Andrew Cranford (Bel Air, Md.) hit .240 (13-7-25) and tallied a team-high six blocks. Senior setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) totaled a team and match-high 62 assists and picked up six digs and three blocks. Senior middle hitter/outside hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) contributed 14 kills (.241 hitting percentage), a team-high16 digs and added four blocks. Junior outside hitter/libero Brian Carlson (West Seneca, N.Y.) collected 14 digs, while sophomore outside hitter/setter Joe Trinsey (Wilmington, Del.) added 18 kills and five digs.
Senior outside hitter John Colosi (Grand Island, N.Y.) led D’Youville hitting .359 with a team-high 18 kills and 15 digs. Junior setter John Kofmehl (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the team with 45 assists.
Bochicchio led the Ducks against the Violets with 17 kills, two blocks and eight digs. Stoner contributed 10 kills, one ace, five blocks and 13 digs. Trinsey totaled nine kills, one ace and two blocks, while Carlson led the team with 14 digs. Schulte led Stevens with 36 assists in three games.
Sophomore outside hitter Devin Zolnowski (Ssan Diego, Calif.) led the Violets with 13 kills, one ace, eight digs and four blocks. Senior middle blocker Brian Vilven (San Diego, Calif.) was second on the team with 10 kills, three aces and two blocks. Junior libero Ryan Musto (Berkeley, Calif.) led the team with nine digs, while freshman setter Braden Fujikawa (Santa Monica, Calif.) was the top setter for NYU with 22 assists.
Stevens is back in action on Friday when it travels to Newark, N.J. to play Rutgers University at 7 p.m.
