POMONA, N.J. (October 3, 2007) – On Wednesday evening, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as the Ducks dropped a 6-3 decision to Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J. Stevens now stands 10-1 overall. The Ospreys captured their third consecutive win to improve to 8-1 on the season.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Dana Bacalla and freshman Allyson Kingman claimed an 8-0 win over sophomore Christy Alexander (Centerville, Ind.) and junior Shelly Sai (Colonia, N.J.). Juniors Whitney Bender and Rebecca Ryba dropped a tough 8-6 decision to senior Jessica Victor (Wyckoff, N.J.) and sophomore Kelli Williams (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at second doubles. In the third-doubles flight, sophomore Natalie Schloeder and freshman Kendra Appleheimer nearly overcame a 7-4 deficit as they lost 9-8 (7-2) to junior Lindsey Formisano (Lindenwold, N.J.) and sophomore Ana Estevez (Pennsauken, N.J.).
Bacalla made quick work of junior Christa Phillips (Tinton Falls, N.J.) as she rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles. Bender lost in straight-sets (6-4, 6-4) to Alexander at No. 2 singles. Kingman earned a three-set victory (6-2, 2-6, 6-1) over Williams at third singles. Appleheimer fell behind Victor 4-1 in the first set at fourth singles then rallied to force a tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (7-3). She dropped the second set 6-4. Sai defeated Ryba by the score of 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles. Schloeder was upended by Formisano in straight-sets (6-3, 6-4) at No. 6 singles.
The Ducks will return home for a pair of Empire 8 matches this weekend. On Saturday, Stevens hosts Ithaca College at noon. That match will decide the top overall seed for the postseason tournament. Then, on Sunday, the Ducks welcome Elmira College to town at noon for the final conference match of the regular season.
