Women's Tennis Sweeps All-MAC Freedom Awards, Seven Named All-Conference

Annville, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team swept the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom year-end awards for the second straight year with Alix Dry repeating as Player of the Year, Arik Zeevy repeating as Coach of the Year, and Kaylee Hobbick taking home Rookie of the Year, as announced by the league office Monday.

Dry, Hobbick, Lorena Piegas, & Wei-Wei Lai comprised the quartet named All-MACF First Team quartet and Stephanie Untermeyer, Gigi Arenas, & Julia Chiovitti represented the Second Team trio.

The conference announcement comes less than 48 hours after Stevens won its fifth straight MAC Freedom Tournament Championship, following 4-0 wins over DeSales in the semifinals last Tuesday and Lebanon Valley on Saturday. Untermeyer was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Dry takes home the conference's top individual honor for the second straight year after totaling 25 wins (13 singles, 12 doubles) even before the start of the MAC Freedom Tournament. Playing all 16 of her singles matches at No. 1, Dry won matches in three 4-3 victories for the Ducks (Salisbury, Washington [Md.], Dickinson) with the Dickinson win coming in the midst of a seven-match winning streak that featured conference wins over DeSales, FDU-Florham, and Arcadia.

Hobbick becomes the fourth straight Duck to earn Rookie of the Year honors following a 12-3 singles record during the season, including an eight-match winning streak that included conference wins over DeSales and Arcadia, as well as a match-clinching three-set win over Dickinson. The Austin, Texas native capped the regular season with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lebanon Valley.

Zeevy takes home his fifth conference Coach of the Year honor since 2021 after another undefeated MAC Freedom season. The sixth-year head coach led the Ducks to a 14-2 record during the regular season, picking up a 15th win in the MAC Freedom Semifinals, the most for the program since at least the 2002-03 season.

All-MAC Freedom Second Team last season, Piegas had a singles win in a 4-3 win over Moravian and a doubles win in a 4-3 win over Dickinson. She also dropped just six total games in four conference wins over DeSales, FDU-Florham, Arcadia, and Lebanon Valley.

After making just 10 appearances total between singles and doubles last year, Lai broke out this season, winning 12 of 15 singles matches and 10 of 15 doubles matches. Lai won a doubles match and added a singles victory in 4-3 wins over Salisbury, Washington (Md.), and Dickinson. In addition to her non-conference efforts, Lai finished conference play 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles.

One of just two seniors on the team, Untermeyer becomes a four-time All-Conference honoree following a 6-5 mark in singles competition (6-2 at No. 3), and an 11-4 doubles mark (10-3 teaming with Arenas). Untermeyer went 3-0 in conference singles matches (dropping just five games total), and 4-0 in conference doubles (teaming with both Arenas & Aliona Heitz), dropping just four games in all, reaching 50 career doubles wins during the MAC Freedom Semifinal win over DeSales.

Last year's MAC Freedom Tournament MVP, Arenas finished the Spring season 7-5 (winning at least two matches at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 in singles) and 10-4 in doubles. Arenas dropped just two games across two singles wins against DeSales & Arcadia, and teamed with Untermeyer for a trifecta of doubles wins over DeSales, Arcadia, and Lebanon Valley – conceding just three total games in those victories.

Chiovitti played just six singles matches and five doubles matches during the year, but made the most of that time, winning every singles match while posting a 3-2 doubles record. The junior won in straight sets against Catholic, Moravian, and DeSales, adding a three-set comeback win over Bryn Mawr; she also collected a pair of doubles wins with Heitz against Misericordia and King's.
