NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 27, 2007) – Senior forward Tim Williams led all players with 20 points and 17 rebounds as the 21st-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team posted a 70-57 win over the City College of New York on Tuesday evening at Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, N.Y. Williams connected on nine of 11 shots from the floor as the Ducks ran their record to 4-0 on the year. The Beavers dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
Senior forward Joseph Ayodele had a big game off the bench. Ayodele finished with 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. He added two rebounds and a pair of steals in 15 minutes of action. Junior guard Virgil Gray totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the win.
CCNY was led by senior forward Franklin Canales (New York, N.Y.), who had six points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Daniel Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 11 points for the Beavers.
Stevens jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Gray sparked the rally with a pair of made jumpers. Sophomore guard Matt Higgins capped the spurt with a three-point basket.
CCNY worked its way back into the contest and closed to within 16-13 with 5:53 left in the period as Colon converted a three-point play. The Ducks responded with eight unanswered points over a 2:28 stretch to regain control. Williams made two lay-ups in the run. Stevens led 26-17 at the break.
After an evenly played first 10 minutes of the second half, the Ducks pulled away with a 10-0 run. Leading 49-41, Ayodele scored inside to get things going. He also capped the burst with another basket as Stevens opened a 59-41 advantage with 6:59 remaining in the game.
After shooting 32.3 percent (10-for-31) from the floor in the first half, the Ducks made 17 of 32 field-goal attempts (53.1 percent) after intermission. For the game, Stevens shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63). On the other hand, CCNY struggled from the field and made just 19 of 64 attempts (29.7 percent) overall. The Beavers were 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) from the floor in the first half. The Ducks out-rebounded CCNY 57-35.
