Dudek Notches Triple-Double as Women's Basketball Runs Past Alfred, 83-67, in Empire 8 Opener

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 30, 2007) – Junior guard Dani Dudek earned her first triple-double of the season on Friday night with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team rolled to an 83-67 victory over Alfred University at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. The contest also served as the conference opener for both squads. With the win, the Ducks ran their overall record to 4-1, while the Saxons dropped to 1-5.

In the first half, Stevens led 12-4 after the first four minutes. Alfred worked its way back in and knotted the game up at 19-19 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard/forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, N.Y.) with 10:49 left. The Ducks then out-scored the Saxons by a 20-6 count in the final 10:12 of the period. During that time, Stevens went on a 13-0 run in a span of 3:59. Senior forward Dora Enright and Dudek joined for eight points in the streak. Webber capped it off with a trifecta, which gave the hosts a 36-22 advantage with 2:45 to go. The Ducks went into the break up 40-25.

In the second half, the Ducks put the contest out of reach with a 15-5 run over the course of 5:15. With Stevens leading 46-36 with just under 16 minutes remaining, senior guard Jean Matusiak started the spurt with a three- ball. Enright and Dudek then combined for the next eight points, which included a pair of converted three-point plays. Enright also ended the burst with a made lay-up at the 10:34 mark to take a 61-41 lead.
 
Stevens shot 44.0 percent (33-for-75) from the field and 73.7 percent (14-for-19) from the free-throw line. Alfred was 21-of-55 from the floor and 23-of-31 while shooting at the charity stripe.

Enright finished out the evening with 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting. She also brought down nine rebounds. Matusiak registered nine points, nine rebounds, two assists and three steals. Freshman center Victoria O'Connor accumulated 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Saxons were led by junior guard Melanie Jackson (Andover, N.Y.), who compiled a team-high 20 points on 6-for-13 shooting. She was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. Sophomore forward Danielle Cooper (Reading, Pa.) tallied 14 points and grabbed two boards.

Head Coach Jon Hochberg and the Ducks return to action this Sunday when they wrap up their three-game homestand against league opponent St. John Fisher College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and all of the action can be seen at www.Empire8.tv.
