Men’s Volleyball Rallies to Defeat New Paltz in Five Games

Senior Sean Whelan helped lead the Ducks past New Paltz for their fourth conference win of the season.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 16, 2007) – The sixth ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team earned its second straight win, defeating No. 14 SUNY New Paltz in five games (30-21, 21-30, 30-32, 30-24, 15-11) on Friday night in Hoboken, N.J.  With the win, Stevens improved to 15-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while New Paltz dropped to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the league with the loss.

Sophomore outside hitter/setter Joe Trinsey (Wilmington, Del.) led the Ducks with 18 kills on the night.  He also added eight digs and one block.  Senior outside hitter Sean Whelan (Springfield, Mass.) was second on the team with 12 kills, six digs and one block.  Senior middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) registered 10 kills and five blocks.  Junior libero Josh Coffing (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the team with 13 digs.  Setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) tallied 53 assists as the leading setter for Stevens.

Freshman middle hitter Christopher Holden (Stony Brook, N.Y.) paced New Paltz with a team-leading 13 kills.  Junior libero Pedro Medina (Brentwood, N.Y.) led the Hawks with 13 digs.  Sophomore setter Matthew Weingarten (East Moriches, N.Y.) tallied 48 assists in five games.

Stevens will be back in action on Monday when it hosts Yeshiva University at 8 p.m.
