Men’s Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Juniata

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 23, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team gave No. 1 ranked Juniata College a good run, but the Eagles came up with the victory in three games (36-34, 30-28, 30-23) on Friday night in Hoboken, N.J.  No. 6 ranked Stevens dropped to 25-6, while Juniata improved to 11-6 with the win.  The Ducks have not lost a match since the Eagles defeated them, 3-1, on February 10.

Sophomore middle hitter Andrew Cranford (Bel Air, Md.) led Stevens with 10 kills, while hitting .600 for three games (10-1-15).  Senior middle/outside hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) was second on the team with nine kills and was the team dig leader with 15.  Sophomore outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.) chipped in with eight kills.  Bochicchio and outside hitter/libero Brian Carlson (West Seneca, N.Y.) were second on the team with 10 digs apiece.  Setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) was the leading setter on the night with 38 assists.

Right side hitter Nate Ocasio (Manchester, Pa.) led Juniata with 14 kills and registered four digs.  Right side/outside hitter Matt Fritz (Churchville, Md.) was second on the team with 12 kills.  Outside hitter Glenn DeHaven (South Huntington, N.Y.) was the leader in digs with 12, while libero Steve Yeager (East Petersburg, Pa.) was second on the team with 11.  Setter Matt Werle (Meadville, Pa.) tallied 34 assists in three games for the Eagles.

Juniata out-hit Stevens .151 (43-24-126) to .144 (39-23-111) in the match.

Stevens will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Brooklyn, N.Y. for a tri-match with Polytechnic University and Ramapo College.  The first match will begin at 11 a.m.
