Men’s Volleyball Downs Brooklyn in Opening Round of NECVA Championship

Sophomore Joe Trinsey contributed eight kills and three blocks to help lead Stevens past Brooklyn.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 30, 2007) – Top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology is one step closer to this year’s North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Championship title after defeating Brooklyn College (30-22, 30-21, 30-21) in the opening round of this year’s tournament on Friday afternoon at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.  Senior middle/outside hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) led Stevens with 11 kills, 10 digs, two aces and four blocks, while hitting .400 for three games.  With the win, the Ducks improved to 28-6 on the year. 

Sophomore outside hitter/setter Joe Trinsey (Wilmington, Del.) was second on the team with eight kills and three blocks, while freshman outside hitter Jonathan Landis (Sellersville, Pa.) was third on the team with six kills.  Senior middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) led the team with five blocks on the day.  Setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) was the leading setter with 44 assists.

Sophomore outside hitter Kwan Tong Ma (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Brooklyn with six kills and five digs.  Senior outside hitter Michael Giordano (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with six kills as well.  Sophomore middle hitter/opposite hitter Aleksey Yershov (New York, N.Y.) totaled 23 assists in three games.

As a team, Stevens out hit Brooklyn .344 (50-17-96) to .096 (25-18-73)

Stevens, who has won two of the last four NECVA post-season tournament titles, will compete in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 11 a.m.
