HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 14, 2007) – After sweeping all three doubles contests, the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team won four of six singles matches as the Ducks earned a 7-2 non-conference victory over Ramapo College on Saturday in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, Stevens improved to 11-7 on the year. The Roadrunners fell to 6-2 overall with the loss.
Junior Ricky Bawa (Lyndhurst, N.J.) and freshman Piotr Rusinkiewicz (Califon, N.J.) defeated senior Ross Switkes (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Alan Kats (Montville, N.J.) by the score of 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Senior Boris Kocherov (Edison, N.J.) and junior Arjun Mehta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with an 8-5 win at second doubles. Sophomore Kobe Attias (Brick, N.J.) and freshman Russ Suereth (Hewitt, N.J.) added an 8-2 victory in the third flight.
Bawa earned a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-1) over Kats at first singles. Kocherov needed three sets (6-1, 4-6, 7-5) to knock off Switkes. Rusinkiewicz dropped a tough three-set match (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) to sophomore Keith Dobrin (Tinton Falls, N.J.) at No. 3 singles. Mehta lost in a third-set tiebreaker to junior Joe Marino (Goshen, N.Y.) at fourth singles by the score of 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Attias recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory against senior Scott Seaman (Hazlet, N.J.) at No. 5 singles. Senior Ian Mullican (Gillette, N.J.) rallied after losing the first set to post a 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win over junior Jeff Shau (Hackettstown, N.J.).
Stevens will be back in action on Sunday with a Skyline Conference match against Yeshiva University in Edgewater, N.J. That contest will begin at 1 p.m.
