HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 5, 2007) – Playing its third match in five days, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, the Ducks improved to 3-0 overall. The Devils dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
Stevens opened the match by sweeping all three doubles contests. In the first flight, senior Dana Bacalla teamed with freshman Allyson Kingman to post an 8-2 win over sophomores Leslee Johnson (Darnestown, Md.) and Jill Horn (Narbeth, Pa.). The second-doubles team of juniors Whitney Bender and Rebecca Ryba defeated senior Robin Hargesheimer (Collegeville, Pa.) and sophomore Megan Koenig (Jobstown, N.J.) by the score of 8-0. At third doubles, freshman Kendra Appleheimer and sophomore Natalie Schloeder recorded an 8-3 victory against sophomores Elizabeth Robley (Teaneck, N.J.) and Alyssa Catuogno (Staten Island, N.Y.).
In singles action, Bacalla posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Johnson in the first flight. Bender was a straight-sets winner (6-1, 6-3) against Horn at second singles. Kingman dropped a total of one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory against Hargesheimer at No. 3 singles. Appleheimer needed just two sets (7-5, 6-2) to knock off Koenig in the fourth flight. Ryba defeated Robley 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Freshman Dalia Meleis added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Catuogno in the sixth flight.
Coming up on Saturday, Stevens will hit the road to take on Empire 8 rival Alfred University at 1 p.m. in Alfred, N.Y.
