NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 22, 2008) – The No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team got a goal off the stick of junior Kara Borzillo with 1:07 left in regulation to lift the Ducks to a 1-0 victory over SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon in New Paltz, N.Y. The tally was assisted by freshman Jillian Price as the win moves Stevens to 14-2 overall. Stevens has now won two-straight by shutout since falling to William Paterson by a 3-2 final a week ago.

Stevens controlled the contest all day but had trouble finishing. The Ducks held a 14-2 advantage in shots and a 14-1 lead in corners. Senior captain Allison Shields had a another strong game in the Stevens midfield. She applied pressure, controlled the middle of the field, and continuously kept the ball in the attacking zone.

Senior Stephanie Smith played the first half in goal for Stevens and made one save. Sophomore Ellyn Griggs came in and played the second half in net for the Ducks.

The play of the game came late in the first half. In the 28th minute, Jess Moore (Walden, N.Y.) was on a one-on-one breakaway and fired a shot from the right side that deflected off Smith and was headed towards the goal before junior Erin Broderick sprinted in and knocked the ball off the goal line to keep the game scoreless.

Stevens outshot New Paltz (2-11) 9-0 in the second half and finally capitalized on its 14th corner of the game to come out with the 1-0 victory. The goal was Borzillo's league-high 19th of the season as the assist was the first of Price's young career.

Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock, N.Y.) took the loss in goal for the Hawks. She was credited with eight saves on the afternoon.

The Ducks return to action at Empire 8 foe Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. With a win, Stevens will clinch a top-two seed in the Empire 8 Tournament.
