HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2008) – Sophomore Allyson Kingman recorded her fourth singles win of the season to bring her record to 4-0 as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team locked up a conference win over St. John Fisher College earlier today in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks defeated the Cardinals by a 8-1 mark, while Stevens ran its overall record to 2-2 and Fisher falls to 1-1.
Stevens produced another 3-0 ledger in doubles play as the combination of senior Whitney Bender and Kingman came away with an 8-6 victory over juniors Laura Hale (Warsaw, N.Y.) and Katie Barlow (Latham, N.Y.). Freshman Nicole Portner and sophomore Kendra Appleheimer registered an 8-5 win over seniors Lauren Jones (Clarence, N.Y.) and Katie Neubeck (Avon, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles. The freshman-junior combination of Morgan Scalzi and Natalia Schloeder took down junior Roseann Fisher (Greece, N.Y.) and sophomore Katelyn Smith (Lockport, N.Y.) by an 8-2 count.
Leading the way in singles was Appleheimer who won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 over Neubeck at fourth singles. Portner's sets against Jones was the clincher for Stevens as she took care of business having won by a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 decision. Bender fell at No. 1 singles by a 6-4, 6-0 mark against Hale for the Cardinals only point. Kingman landed her fourth consecutive singles win of the season with a 7-6 (8), 6-3 victory over Barlow.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Mine Bese dominated Smith as the newcomer won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Scalzi followed with her 5-7, 6-0, 10-2 victory over freshman Jessica Mayo at sixth singles.
The Ducks return to action for a non-conference match up against Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
