Men's Swimming Cruises to 117-73 Win Over Adelphi in Final Home Meet of Season

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 31, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team rolled over Adelphi University, 117-73 on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks earned seven first-place finishes and were able to exhibition the final two events of the afternoon en route to the easy victory. Freshman Matt Smith notched two firsts for Stevens as the Ducks improved their dual-meet record to 4-3 on the season. Stevens honored its lone senior, captain Will Gerboth, prior to the meet. It was the last home meet of his four-year career.

Stevens jumped out to a big lead early as the Ducks took first and second in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomores Nicholas Walulik and Matt Preedy, and freshmen Matthew Carpinella and John DiMiceli finished in 1:40.87, almost six seconds better than second place.

Smith got his first win in the 1,650-yard freestyle as he carded a 17:10.50. Sophomore Daniel Pecoraro and freshman Sean Iveson took second and third in the 200-free, and Stevens took one, two, and three in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Carl Nagle placed first in the event, carding a 22.69. Nagle was followed by rookie Steven Vealey in second and DiMiceli in third.

Walulik notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.07), and freshman Jonathan Wan took third. Carpinella won the 100-yard butterfly by more than a full second as he carded a 56:58 in the win. Preedy and Nagle took first and second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.04, 50.18), and Walulik and freshman Benjamin Watkins were two-three in the 100-back.

Smith's second first-place finish came in the 500-yard freestyle event. He turned in a 5:01.78 and was followed by Pecoraro in second.

Stevens will return to action on February 7 with a dual-meet versus Ramapo College. It will be the final meet before the Empire 8 Championships.
