Women's Tennis Sweeps Doubles In Win Over Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. (October 11, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team downed Hartwick College, 6-3, in an Empire 8 dual-match in Oneonta, N.Y. to move to 10-2 overall on the season with a 7-1 league ledger. The Ducks began the day by sweeping three doubles matches before going 3-3 in singles action. The Hawks are now 4-8 on the year and 3-6 in conference play.

Stevens junior Allyson Kingman and sophomore Nicole Portner started things off with an 8-4 win in top-flight doubles over Betsy Breaznell (Delmar, N.Y.) and Christina Sorrentino (Sherril, N.Y.) before sophomore Morgan Scalzi and junior Kendra Appleheimer staked Stevens to a 2-0 advantage with a decisive 8-0 victory in second-flight doubles. Sophomore Mine Bese and senior co-captain Natalie Schloeder completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Hartwick juniors Carly Jesset (Shelburne, Vt.) and Emily Scarano (Little Falls, N.Y.).

Scalzi would up the Stevens advantage to 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Jesset in No. 5 singles before Kingman ousted Breaznell, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 1 singles. The Hawks would score their first win of the afternoon in No. 6 singles, making it 5-1 in favor of the Ducks, before Bese clinched Stevens' tenth win in its last 11 dual-matches with a 6-4, 6-2, triumph over Sorrentino in No. 3 singles.

The Ducks are back in action on Wednesday, October 21 at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J.
