NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 24, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team moved to 3-0 with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at the 2009 New York University Fall Invitational in Manhattan, N.Y. The Ducks defeated cross-river rival NYU by a score of, 79-43, and beat SUNY New Paltz by a count of 101-21. Stevens took the top spot in the first four events and in nine overall en route to the pair of victories.
The team of freshman Peter Ko, junior Matthew Preedy, freshman John Hu, and sophomore Carl Nagle got the Ducks started well, earning a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay and junior Evan Wilson earned his first top finish of the day in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.43).
Ko took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.55 and Preedy earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching at 1:02.14. Wilson's second win of the day came in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.91), as Nagle and sophomore Steve Vealey took second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle (22.38, 22.69). Sophomore Matthew Smith and Preedy took second and third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.21, 49.38).
Ko won the 200-yard backstroke, touching at 1:58.20 and junior Dan Pecoraro took second (2:04.69). Hu won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.52 and freshman Alex Benham was third (2:17.37). Benham won the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:43.87 as Wilson was second (4:51.72).
Hu and Ko finished one-two in the 200-yard individual medley with times of 1:57.72 and 2:01.91, respectively, and Pecoraro, freshman Derek Smith, Preedy, and Wilson turned in a 3:15.01 in placing second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Stevens will return to competitive action on November 1 when it hosts The College of New Jersey at the De Baun Aquatic Center. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
