Catanzano, Handel Lead Women's Tennis To Eighth Straight Win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 3, 2009) – Freshmen Brooke Catanzano and Alexandra Handel went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles action to a lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team to a rain-shortened, 6-0, victory over Empire 8 rival Elmira College. Having reeled off eight consecutive victories following a season-opening loss to perennial powerhouse The College of New Jersey, the Ducks are now 8-1 on the season with a 5-0 league ledger.

Handel and junior co-captain Kendra Appleheimer got things started for Stevens, moving to 7-1 in No. 3 doubles after an 8-2 victory over Katherine Stebbins (Scotia, N.Y.) and Clare Lowery (Syracuse, N.Y.). Catanzano and sophomore Morgan Scalzi, now 8-1 in No. 2 doubles, would then down Alexandra Putney (Dundee, N.Y.) and Briana Palmiero (Rochester, N.Y.), 8-1, to stake the Ducks to a 2-0 lead. Junior Allyson Kingman and sophomore Nicole Portner would complete the doubles sweep with an 8-1 triumph over Rebecca Kingman (Hamilton, N.J.) and Alia Pyros (Shavertown, Pa.) in No. 1 doubles.

Portner would increase the Ducks lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Putney in second-flight singles action, before Handel defeated Desiree Calderella (Pittsfield, Mass.), 6-1, 6-0 in sixth-flight singles. Catanzano recorded the Ducks final win in the rain-shortened affair, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0, win over Elyse Colby (Oswego, N.Y.) in fifth-flight singles.

Stevens is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, October 4 when it plays host to four-time defending Empire 8 champion Ithaca College in the squad's annual Duck Country event slated to begin at 12 p.m.
