Freshmen Lead Men's Swimming to 144-118 Win Over TCNJ

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 1, 2009) – Freshman John Hu won three events and freshmen Alex Benham and Peter Ko each won two apiece as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team defeated The College of New Jersey, 144-118 on Sunday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center. Stevens took first in a total of nine events as the Ducks improve to 4-0 on the young season.

Stevens started things off with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Peter Ko, junior Matthew Preedy, freshman John Hu, and sophomore Carl Nagle carded a 1:40.20. Freshman Alex Benham and junior Evan Wilson took one-two in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:45.33, 10:07.93), and junior Dan Pecoraro turned in a 1:47.54 in winning the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Derek Smith earned a third-place finish in the 200-free (1:46.96).

Ko took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.81, and Wilson was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.01). Hu earned his first top finish of the day in the 200-yard butterfly, turning in a 1:55.77, and sophomore Matthew Smith was second (2:00.40).

Nagle and sophomore Steve Vealey were second and third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.22, 22.62) and Benham was second in the 100-free with a 49.08. Derek Smith and Preedy tied for third with a 49.15.

Ko's second win came in the 200-yard backstroke, touching at 1:58.84, and Pecoraro was third (2:00.17). Hu's second win came in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.61). Benham and Wilson took one-two in the 500-yard freestyle. Benham carded a 4:44.31 and Wilson recorded a 4:52.49.

Hu and Ko took the top two spots in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.75, 2:00.86) and the team of Benham, Preedy, Derek Smith, and Wilson won the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 3:15.56.

Stevens will return to action on November 14 when it hosts Misericordia University. The dual-meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start from the De Baun Aquatic Center and the action will be webcast live at www.PennAtlantic.com/main.php.
