Men's Tennis Suffers First Empire 8 Loss of Season to Ithaca, 6-3

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 10, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team fell 6-3 to Ithaca College in a matchup of two conference unbeatens on Saturday at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The Bombers took 2-of-3 matches in doubles play and the first three singles matches as freshman Dan Levine (Highland Mills, N.Y.) clinched the match at No. 6 singles over sophomore Carlo Pardo. The loss drops the Ducks to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8, with Ithaca improving to 13-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Stevens was led by singles victories from junior Piotr Rusinkiewicz and senior Kobe Attias.

Stevens dropped its first two doubles matches before the freshman-sophomore combination of Jay Lee and Gregory Klose overcame sophomore Daniel Adelman (Hampton, Conn.) and senior Andrew Dunnick (Ithaca, N.Y.), 8-6 at third doubles. The Ducks' No. 1 doubles pair of sophomores Arik Zeevy and Ringstad fell, 8-1 to junior Taylor Borda (Chester, N.J.) and sophomore Josh Rifkin (Ft. Wayne, Ind.). Rusinkiewicz and Attias dropped an 8-2 decision to the tandem of freshman Jimmy Newton (Englewood, Fla.) and junior Danny Wolk (Potomac, Md.).

In singles play, Borda upended Zeevy in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) at first singles to give the Bombers a 3-1 advantage on the match. Next to finish, was fourth singles with Lee haven fallen to Wolk (1-6, 7-5, 7-5). Pardo fought to keep the Ducks in it, however he dropped a first set tiebreaker (7-6 (4) 7-5) to Levine at sixth singles. After Ithaca clinched the match, Rusinkiewicz notched a 7-6 (4), 0-6, 7-6 (2) over Newton victory at third singles. The other singles win came from Attias as he defeated freshman Mike Muraco (Manlius, N.Y.) 6-7 (8), 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. The match ended with Ringstad having fallen to Rifkin 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-1.

Stevens will return to the courts on Saturday as they host Elmira College at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. slatted for an 11 a.m. start.
