HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 15, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team dropped its fourth match of the season in a non-conference battle versus cross-river rival New York University on Wednesday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J. After the Ducks held a 2-1 advantage through doubles play, Stevens was swept in singles action to fall on the day by a 7-2 count. The Ducks are now 11-4 on the year as the Violets stand at 6-6 overall.
Sophomores Jason Ringstad and Arik Zeevy upended the senior tandem of Craig Berger (Hewlett, N.Y.) and Calvin Chou (Livingston, N.J.), 8-1 at No. 1 singles. The freshman-sophomore combination of Patrick Whitner (Bradenton, Fla.) and Alex Stoler (River Vale, N.J.) defeated senior Kobe Attias and junior Piotr Rusinkiewicz by an 8-5 count at second doubles. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Jay Lee and freshman Gregory Klose took down the tandem of sophomore Matthew Gross (Boca Raton, Fla.) and junior Eugene Tsarevskiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 8-6.
After its slight 2-1 advantage, Stevens was swept in singles play as Whitner dropped Zeevy at No. 1 singles by a 7-5, 6-1 decision. Second singles featured a 7-5, 6-3 win by Berger over Ringstad. Chou overcame Rusinkiewicz (6-2, 6-4) at No. 3 sinlges, while sophomore Jason Sacher (Glen Head, N.Y.) upended Lee, 6-4, 6-3. Attias fell to Tsarevskiy (6-4, 7-5) at fifth singles as Stoler took care of sophomore Carlo Pardo, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
The Ducks will return to Empire 8 play when they take on Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. on Saturday at 2 p.m. Stevens currently holds a 5-1 league ledger.
