CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (April 5, 2009) – Senior outside hitter Joe Trinsey was relentless on Sunday afternoon as he helped to lift the sixth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over No. 5 Nazareth College in the championship round of the 2009 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Tournament. The Ducks have claimed their fourth NECVA title and have advanced to the 2009 Division III Molten National Championship, scheduled for April 17-18 in Mahwah, N.J. at Ramapo College. Trinsey landed 20 kills on 36 swings with just an error to produce a .528 hitting percentage. Senior middle hitter Andrew Cranford was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament as he launched four service aces and notched a .571 hitting percentage in the final match against the Golden Flyers. The energy the Ducks had was contagious as Trinsey fueled the fire with his emotions to send Stevens to its sixth NECVA appearance since the inaugural season of 1997.
Set 1 Naz-30, SIT-26
The Ducks were off to a good start on the match behind some aggressive serving of Cranford. Stevens went up 10-6 off of back-to-back kills from Trinsey, splitting the block on both of his swings. Nazareth came back to knot it at 10-all when the squad was able to stop Cranford on a middle attack for a huge block. Solid blocking by the Golden Flyers was the theme of the set as a triple block put them on top, 16-15. Nazareth then posted a 4-1 run behind the serve of senior middle blocker Ryan Johnsen (Hamburg, N.Y.).
Down by four (22-18) Cranford landed a kill to switch the momentum in favor of the Ducks as Bochicchio followed it up with a kill of his own. Junior right-side hitter Brian Bunch (Liverpool, N.Y.) drilled four kills for the Golden Flyers as senior setter Frank Leahy (Smithtown, N.Y.) connected on 12 assists.
