WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (September 5, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team evened its record at 1-1, after defeating Nazareth College, 6-3, at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. Stevens, which lost to Nazareth 7-2 in last season's league opener, is now 1-0 in conference play, while Nazareth, picked to finish third in the Empire 8 in a preseason poll of the league's nine head coaches, falls to 0-2 on the year, with an 0-1 mark in conference action.
Stevens junior Allyson Kingman earned her first victory of the season with a 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) win over Jackeline Martinez (Cortland, N.Y.), in top-flight singles, while Ducks' junior Kendra Appleheimer defeated sophomore Abbey Goings (Canastota, N.Y.), 6-2, 6-2 in fourth-flight singles.
Freshmen Brooke Catanzano and Alexandra Handel earned their first collegiate victories, with wins over their Golden Flyers counterparts in fifth and sixth-flight singles, respectively. Catanzano downed junior Kelly Noble (Cortland, N.Y.) in the No. 5 slot, 6-3, 6-1, while Handel outlasted Nazareth junior Sherrita Wilkins (Rochester, N.Y.), 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Catanzano and sophomore Morgan Scalzi defeated Noble and freshman Alexandra Vizgaitis (Fayetteville, N.Y.), 8-6, in No. 2 doubles action, while the duo of Appleheimer and Handel notched an 8-3 victory in No. 3 doubles over Wilkins and freshman Cara Yinger (Fayetteville, N.Y.).
The Ducks are back in action Sunday, September 6, at the Mercer County Tennis Center against league rival Rochester Institute of Technology. Stevens' scheduled home match against Rutgers-Newark on September 9 has been moved to the Scarlet Raider campus in Newark, N.J. while renovations are completed on the Stevens Tennis Courts.
