Women's Tennis Sweeps Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 9, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team swept Elmira College, 9-0, behind senior Allyson Kingman who scored both a No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles victory. With the win, the Ducks moved to 10-1 on the season with a 6-1 league ledger, while the Soaring Eagles fell to 1-10 on the year with a 1-7 mark against conference opponents.

Kingman and junior Nicole Portner scored an 8-3 victory in first doubles, while freshman Lisa Tessitore and junior Kendra Appleheimer netted an 8-1 win in second doubles. Stevens' Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese rounded out the Ducks' doubles pairings with an 8-3 win in the third slot.

Kingman headed up singles action with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the top spot, while Tessitore defeated her Elmira counterpart, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Portner scored a 6-2, 6-1, triumph in No. 3 singles, while Appleheimer earned a 6-4, 6-0, win at No. 4 singles. Bese and sophomore Alexandra Handel rounded out singles play with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Stevens returns to action on Sunday, October 10 against Ithaca College.
