Hannum Powers Men's Volleyball Past Bard

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 2, 2010) – Freshman Tom Hannum recorded a match-high 14 kills and seven digs as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team picked up its second-straight sweep with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-19) victory over visiting Bard College at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks improved to 10-8 overall on the season with a 3-2 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Metro Division record, while the Raptors fell to 11-6 on the year with a 2-4 NECVA Metro mark.

Senior co-captain John Dennan) finished with 13 kills, while junior SteFan PremDas registered 10 kills in the win. Junior middle hitter Timothy Karl added six kills and four blocks, while junior setter Brandt Grobeis dished out a match-high 43 assists and a match-best eight digs.

Senior Henry Schenker (Verona, N.J.), junior Max Howard (Lafayette, Calif.), and sophomore Nick Chan (Victor, N.Y.) each tallied six kills to lead the Raptors offensively, with Chan also tallying a team-high 11 assists. Freshman outside hitter Randy Walters (Westmoreland, Jamaica) had a team-best eight digs.

Stevens returns to action on Friday, March 5 against Division I Harvard University in the team's annual Duck Country event.

Set 1: Stevens 30, Bard 19
Stevens opened the match on a 5-1 run capped off by a Jake Modestow kill. Still up four, PremDas notched another spike, making it 8-3. Ahead by five at 9-4, the Ducks scored back-to-back points, taking a seven-point edge on a Hannum kill, before two consecutive Raptor scores, capped off by a Ryan Fallon (Ridgewood, N.Y.) block, made it 11-6.

A PremDas kill momentarily quelled the Bard tide, but back-to-back points on a Howard kill and a Schenker service ace cut the lead to 12-8. Stevens responded with a 7-2 run of its own, capped off by a PremDas kill, a Modestow ace, and a Karl spike, forcing Bard's second timeout.

The Raptors pulled within seven on an Eliah Gardner (Chatham, N.Y.) kill, but a 9-4 Ducks rally to close out the set gave Stevens a 1-0 advantage.

Set 2: Stevens 30, Bard 23
With the second set tied at nine, Stevens reeled off four unanswered points capped off by a PremDas kill, to force a Bard timeout. The Raptors netted the set's next point coming out of the break, but a Hannum kill coupled with a PremDas spike, led to four-straight Stevens points that staked the Ducks to a 17-10 advantage.

Still ahead by seven at 25-18, the Ducks committed back-to-back errors, paring the lead to five, but a Dennan kill upped the Stevens margin back up to six. Bard would battle back, cutting it to three at 26-23, but a Raptor serving error led to a 4-0 Ducks' run as Stevens took a decisive 2-0 set edge.

Set 3: Stevens 30, Bard 19
Bard took a 2-0 lead to start the third set, before a Hannum kill put Stevens on the board. After a Schenker kill made it 5-2, Karl answered with a spike of his own; kick-starting a 6-1 Stevens run that gave the Ducks an 8-6 lead, while forcing another Bard stoppage.

The Raptors scored back-to-back points coming out of the break, tying the game on a Schenker block, but a Hannum spike on the ensuing possession spurred on a 3-0 Stevens spurt that put the Ducks ahead, 11-8. Bard pulled within one at 11-10, but back-to-back Hannum scores led to a 5-0 Stevens' rally that forced a Raptor timeout.

Two consecutive Bard points pared the Raptors' deficit to four at 16-12, but a Ryan Dunham kill started a 4-1 Ducks' run that gave Stevens a 20-13 lead. Still up seven at 23-16 following a Dennan kill, Stevens closed out the set on a 7-3 run to complete the 3-0 sweep.
