EWING, N.J. (January 30, 2011) – In one of the fastest dual-meets in the nation thus far in the 2010-11 season, No. 11 The College of New Jersey defeated the eighth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team, 144-118, on Sunday afternoon in Ewing, N.J. The Ducks, now 3-1 on the season, were led by three first's by sophomore John Hu.
TCNJ (8-2) opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as the Ducks' team of sophomore Greg Charriez, senior Matthew Preedy, sophomore Daniel Munt, and freshman Tyler Hessler took second, clocking a 1:36.87.
Sophomore Alex Benham notched the first Stevens win of the afternoon, taking the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:51.47. He was followed by senior Evan Wilson in second (9:54.74), and freshman Jake Witter in third (9:57.75). Senior Dan Pecoraro was second in the 200-yard freestyle, carding a 1:43.92.
Charriez and freshman Shawn Hanak placed third and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (54.02, 54.60), while Wilson took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.16. Preedy placed third, touching at 1:01.03.
Hu won the 200-yard butterfly, with a 1:52.50, junior Matthew Smith was third (1:59.77) and Witter was fourth (2:00.59). Hessler was the Ducks' best sprinter in the 50-yard freestyle, placing second with a time of 21.67. He also took third in the 100-yard freestyle (47.76).
Pecoraro placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.41) and was followed by Hanak in third (1:59.57), and freshman Nick Noga in fourth (1:59.59). Hu and Wilson were first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke, notching times of 2:11.10 and 2:11.74, respectively, while Benham and freshman Conor Arcuri did the same in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.35, 4:48.69).
Munt's 53.17 was the best Duck time in the 100-yard butterfly, earning him a third-place finish, and Hu took home his third first of the afternoon in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.54. Benham placed third, clocking a 1:59.69.
In the final event of the afternoon, the team of freshman Joe Huyett, Munt, Hessler, and Preedy placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.44).
Stevens will return to dual-meet action on February 5 when it visits Hartwick College.
