HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 5, 2011) – Eight different Ducks turned in winning times as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team rolled to a 169-85 win over Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center. Sophomore Shawn Hanak (North Royalton, Ohio), junior Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) all notched a pair of victories in the Ducks' second dual-meet win of the year.
Stevens, now 2-0, has wins of Misericordia and Montclair State University, and also took first place in the New York University Fall Invitational – a tri-meet against NYU and SUNY Cortland.
In their two dual-meet wins, Stevens has recorded the fastest time in 29-of-30 events.
Junior Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), sophomore Brian Ginebaugh (Belmont, Mich.), junior Daniel Munt (Raleigh, N.C.), and senior tri-captain Carl Nagle (Little Silver, N.J.) opened the afternoon with a 1:37.77 in winning the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Conor Arcuri (Beaverton, Ore.), freshman Carlos Blandon (Miami Beach, Fla.), and freshman Chris Iosue (Bellingham, Mass.) swept the top-three spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:09.18, 10:09.93, 10:30.80), while Benham tallied his first win of the afternoon in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:45.42. Freshman Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.) was third in the event (1:48.97).
Hanak's first win of the day came in the 100-yard backstroke (54.31) as sophomore Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.) placed third (55.94). Hu notched a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.90), with Ginebaugh touching third (1:03.13), while freshman Price Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) earned a win with a 1:58.58 in the 200-yard butterfly. Charriez was second in the 100-fly with a 2:00.16, while Hanak clocked his second win of the day in the 50-yard freestyle (22.08). He was closely followed by Nagle and Munt at 22.26 and 22.28, respectively.
Sophomore Joe Huyett (Blandon, Pa.) and junior Derek Smith (Boise, Idaho) went one-two in the 100-yard freestyle (48.81, 48.85), while Charriez and John Hu did the same in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.62, 1:59.11).
Senior tri-captain Mark Bagniewski (Cranford, N.J.) was second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:18.78 and Ginebaugh took third (2:19.03).
Benham nabbed his second victory on the afternoon in the 500-yard freestyle, carding a 4:46.30 and was followed by Elford (4:52.20) and Noga (4:55.89). Freshman Jack Rees (Temecula, Calif.) was first in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall at 53.72, as freshman Jonathan Collins (Tecumseh, Calif.) finished third (55.98).
The Ducks swan the final two events in exhibition but John Hu's 2:00.15 was good enough for a win, as was the 3:12.40 sophomore Elijah Davis (Broomfield, Colo.), Hanak, Munt, and Huyett carded in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Stevens will now turn its attention to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for December 2-4 in East Meadow, N.Y. The Ducks will be looking to defend the two-year reign as ECAC Champions.
