HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 24, 2011) – Senior Brandon Faubert finished with five points on three goals and a pair of assists, as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team, ranked sixth in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) coaches poll, cruised past visiting Montclair State 16-5 at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Up 7-1 with 1:20 on the clock after last night's stoppage due to lightning and unplayable field conditions, the Ducks picked up right where they left off, completing the game from the point of interruption this evening.
Hoping to get off to a quick start yesterday, the Ducks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of goals in the first minute of action. Faubert got things started with an unassisted marker at the 14:40 mark before Chris Laurita (fired a shot past Montclair junior goalkeeper Mark Glander(Vernon, N.J.) just 34 seconds later.
Looking to extend the Ducks margin, junior Alex Hofrichter took advantage of a man-up situation just one-minute after Laurita's score, taking a Christian Saley pass before rifling it into the back of the Montclair net to put Stevens up three. Moments later, sophomore Brian Seldeen would cap off a 4-0 Stevens run over the first five with an unassisted tally.
Red Hawks' senior midfielder Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, N.J.) finally put the visitors on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:20, but the Ducks responded by netting three unanswered scores over a six minute span to pull ahead 7-1. Saley got the Stevens rally started, scoring a goal on a Laurita assist, before sophomore midfielder Nicolas Philippi netted a tally on a Kevin Rose helper. Faubert closed out the Ducks' run with his second goal of the day, pushing the lead to six at the 3:22 mark.
Minutes later the game was interrupted due to lightning. With the game resuming at the 1:20 mark of the first quarter the following night, both teams took some time to settle back into the flow of things offensively, with the game remaining scoreless over the next 12-plus minutes of action. Looking to get Stevens back on track, Saley took advantage of a man-up situation with 3:08 left before the half, scoring on a Faubert assist to put the Ducks up 8-1. Trying to keep pace, Matthew Prongay (Edison, N.J.) found the back of the back of the Stevens goal with just under a minute left in the frame to pull Montclair within six heading into the intermission.
Coming out of the break, Faubert netted his third score of the game, staking Stevens to a 9-2 edge. Junior midfielder Rich Dupras extended the Ducks lead to eight just over six minutes later, before MSU sophomore Jack Skeels (Roseland, N.J.) brought the Red Hawks within seven at 5:30. Not allowing the Red Hawks to gain momentum, Laurita quickly answered, burying a goal with 19 seconds left in the third.
Hoping to put the game away, Stevens pushed the pace, again going on the offensive and stringing together four-consecutive goals to open up a 12-point lead. Laurita got things going with a goal at 14:30 before Saley turned a Rose assist into the Ducks' 13th tally. Rose would then net back-to-back scores less than a minute apart to put the Ducks ahead 15-3 with just 9:41 remaining in regulation.
Laurita and Saley each finished with three goals and an assist, while Rose added two scores and a pair of helpers. Philippi, Seldeen, Dupras, and senior Joey Simone each added a goal in the victory.
Senior co-captain Jacob Messimer led the Ducks with six ground balls, while juniors Michael Steinhauser and Matt Marks each had four ground balls. Messimer led Stevens with five caused turnovers, while junior goalkeeper Eric Yando made six saves en route to his seventh-consecutive win to open the 2011 season.
Skeels netted two goals in the contest to lead Montclair, while Sinicola and Prongay each added a score. Glander allowed seven goals in the loss.
Stevens held a decisive 49-18 edge in shots, while going 3-for-5 in extra man opportunities. The Ducks, who went a perfect 16-for-16 on clears, opens conference play this weekend on Saturday, March 26 against Utica College.
