Evans Leads No. 6 Men's Volleyball To Sweep Of UVC Rival DYouville

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (March 5, 2011) – Freshman David Evans hammered home a match-best 12 kills, while hitting .364, as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team, ranked sixth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll, knocked off United Volleyball Conference rival D'Youville College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17), at the second UVC Crossover weekend held in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. With the win, the Ducks put the brakes on a three-match losing skid, improving to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in league play, while the Spartans fell to 8-9 on the year and 4-2 in the UVC.

Holding D'Youville to a paltry -.036 hitting percentage en route to a 25-19 first set triumph, the Ducks hit a match-high .440 in the second frame, taking a 2-0 match edge with a hard-fought 25-22 win. Looking to close out the sweep, Stevens hit .406 in the third set, while holding the Spartans to a .030 attack rate, as the Ducks notched a 25-17 victory.

Senior outside hitter Jonathan Landis added eight kills, hitting .333 in the win, while freshman Ryan Seifert finished with six kills, three digs, and two blocks. Senior Timothy Karl and sophomore Jake Modestow combined for 10 kills and six blocks, while senior co-captain and setter Brandt Grobeis finished with 35 assists and a team-high six digs.

Sophomore Chris Temple (Highwood, Ill.) and senior Jeremy Sajdak (Rochester, N.Y.) paced the Spartans with seven kills apiece, while senior middle blocker Bret Peters (Warsaw, N.Y.) had five kills. Sophomore setter JJ Senozetnik (Eden, N.Y.) collected 22 helpers and a match-high nine digs in the loss.

Stevens closes out play at the second UVC Crossover weekend on Sunday, March 6, when it takes on Medaille College and Elmira College.
