Men's Tennis Opens Empire 8 Slate With Wins Over St. John Fisher And Alfred

OLEAN, N.Y. (April 2, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team began its quest to defend its Empire 8 title, opening up league play by picking up a pair of wins to improve to 5-4 overall on the young season. The Ducks started the day with a 7-2 triumph over St. John Fisher College at the Mendon Racquet Club before earning a decisive 8-1 decision over Alfred University in Olean, N.Y.

Sophomores Shota Tasaki and Chris Rosensteel got the Ducks off to a fast start in its matchup with St. John Fisher, scoring an 8-1 first doubles victory before seniors Jason Ringstad and Arik Zeevy earned an identical 8-1 margin in the second slot. The Ducks' Jay Lee and Lopburi Sasinin scored an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep.

Zeevy headlined Stevens' singles lineup against the Cardinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over John Whelehan (Batavia, N.Y.), while Ringstad took out Joseph Aquino (Fairport, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-4 at second singles. Sasinin earned a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles, while senior Carlo Pardo earned a 6-2, 6-4 win in the fourth slot.

Tasaki and Rosensteel again came through at first doubles in the matchup with Alfred, earning an 8-4 decision over Connor Houghton (Orleans, Mass.) and Nick Schneider (Liverpool, N.Y.), while Ringstad and Zeevy downed Nathan Kucko (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, N.J.) 8-3 in second doubles. Lee and Sasinin rounded out doubles action with an 8-4 triumph over Nathan Garletts (Havertown, Pa.) and Ryan Parlia (Valley Stream, N.Y.).

Rosensteel scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Houghton at No. 1 singles, while Tasaki defeated Schneider 6-1, 6-4 at second singles. Lee downed Garletts 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the third spot, while Gregory Klose defeated Kucko 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in the fourth slot. Senior Ryan Wilson capped off the Ducks' singles wins with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Nonnenmann at fifth singles.

Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 against New York University.
