Men's Swimming Falls to No. 7 TCNJ

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 29, 2012) – The No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team was defeated by No. 7 The College of New Jersey, 154-108 on Sunday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center in Hoboken, N.J. The loss drops the Ducks to 5-2 overall, while the win moves the Lions to 9-1. Junior John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) led Stevens with three individual wins on the day.

Stevens opened the action with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as junior Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), senior Carl Nagle (Little Silver, N.J.), junior Daniel Munt (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Joe Huyett (Blandon, Pa.) combined to turn in a 1:37.78.

Freshman Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.) and junior Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) finished first and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking times of 9:42.27 and 9:54.20. Charriez and sophomore Shawn Hanak (North Royalton, Ohio) went two-three in the 100-yard backstroke (53.09, 53.96), while John Hu, freshman Price Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) and senior Matthew Smith (Cream Ridge, N.J.) swept the top-three places in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.00, 1:59.32, 1:59.53).

Charriez earned a third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.39, and Hu's second win of the afternoon came in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching at 2:10.67. Senior tri-captain Mark Bagniewski (Cranford, N.J.) placed third in the 200-breaststroke, carding a 2:16.88.

Elford and Benham went one-two in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:44.11 and 4:45.79, respectively, and freshman Jack Rees (Temecula, Calif.) and Munt placed second and third in the 100-yard butterfly (53.67, 53.93).

Hu earned his third win of the afternoon in the 200-yard individual medley, tallying a 1:56.26, while Benham's 1:58.80 was good for third. Huyett, sophomore Elijah Davis (Broomfield, Colo.), sophomore Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.) and Hanak took second in the meet's final event – the 400-yard freestyle relay – clocking a 3:12.74.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Hartwick College. The Ducks will honor their seniors prior to the meet beginning at approximately 12:45 p.m.
