Men's Volleyball Remains Unbeaten after Day One of UVC Crossover

(February 11, 2012) – On the first day of United Volleyball Conference crossover play, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated D'Youville College in the first match by five sets and then swept Hilbert College for a perfect afternoon. The Ducks are now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the UVC and will battle Penn State Behrend at 12 p.m. tomorrow.

In the five-set back-and-forth battle with the Spartans, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 14-25, 15-13, junior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) and freshman Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) paced the Ducks with 12 kills apiece. Hannum hit for a .375 percentage to go along with four digs and two block assists, while Tyger hit for a .304 clip and led Stevens with seven digs and seven block assists.

The pair of freshmen setters, Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) combined for 52 assists. Aeckerle handed out 31, while Schlosser tallied 21. Aeckerle also recorded five digs and two service aces.

Sophomore David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) chipped in eight kills and five digs, while junior Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) added five kills and four block assists.

The Ducks received a strong performance from freshman Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) who played two sets and compiled six kills for a .556 percentage, three total blocks and two service aces.

Stevens hit .302 in the opener and scored six service aces.

In the sweep of the Hawks, 25-9, 25-12, 25-14, Stevens was once again superb in hitting percentage, posting a team mark of .552. Sophomore Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) led the way with 11 kills and hit .733.

Hannum and Evans combined for 19 kills against Hilbert. Hannum hit .818, while Evans posted a .833 clip and added three aces.

Schlosser and Aeckerle split time once again and handed out 35 assists. Schlosser handed out 22 in all three sets, while Aeckerle recorded 13 in one set.

The Ducks will look to remain unbeaten tomorrow at noon against Penn State Behrend in Walker Gymnasium. After the first day of play, Stevens, SUNY New Paltz, NYU and Elmira College are all 3-0 in conference.

Tomorrow's matches will begin at 10 a.m. in Walker and Canavan Arena.
