Box Score 2 NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 26, 2012) – For the second straight day, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team split their two matches at the Baruch College Tournament in New York City on February 26. The Ducks topped Kean University, 3-0, but were on the wrong end of a 3-2 outcome to No. 5 Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the second match. Stevens is now 11-3 overall on the season.
In the sweep of Kean, 25-21, 25-20, 25-15, junior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) paced Stevens with 12 kills in 17 attempts, good for a .588 hitting percentage. Hannum also led the Ducks with seven digs and added two blocks.
Freshmen setters Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Dyland Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) once again split time and combined for 44 assists. Aeckerle dished out 27, while Schlosser tallied 17.
Junior Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) posted a solid performance with eight kills and five blocks. Modestow hit at an incredible .667 percentage in the match. Also with eight kills were sophomore Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman Ian Tyger (York, Pa.). Both also recorded two blocks, while Seifert posted five digs in the morning match.
Freshman Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in seven kills and two digs, while junior Ricky Budar (Honolulu, Hawaii) controlled the back row with seven digs.
In the five-set setback to MIT, 25-19, 26-24, 18-25, 11-25, 17-15, Hannum was once again the go-to-guy with 14 kills. He also added four digs, three blocks and an assist.
Tyger and Seifert mimicked each other again with 13 kills apiece. Seifert led Stevens with eight digs, while Tyger recorded an impressive seven blocks. Modestow was equally as impressive with another eight-kill match and a .800 hitting percentage, to go along with nine blocks.
Aeckerle distributed the ball around for 33 assists and four digs, while Schlosser stepped in to hand out 15 assists and five digs.
In the third set alone against the Engineers, Stevens recorded 20 digs, including four each from Hannum, Schlosser, Budar and Seifert. The Ducks also outhit MIT in that set, .345 to .132.
The fourth set was much the same, as Stevens dominated the hitting category in the 25-11 set victory. The Ducks hit .500 in the set, compared to a dismal -.207 by the Engineers. Stevens turned away 11 kill attempts in that game.
For the match, Stevens recorded 16 team blocks to MIT's 9.5. The Ducks also outhit the Engineers in the match, .302 to .182, but were on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
Stevens will be back on the court on March 3 for a home tri-match against SUNY IT and Rutgers University-Newark. The Ducks take on SUNY IT at 12 p.m., before squaring off with Rutgers at 4 p.m.
