Evans Paces Men's Volleyball to Tri-Match Sweep in Home Opener

(February 4, 2012) – Sophomore co-captain David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) tallied 39 total kills for a .361 hitting percentage to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a pair of wins in the Ducks' home-opening tri-match against Ramapo College and Division I Sacred Heart University on February 4 in Walker Gymnasium. Stevens defeated the Roadrunners, 3-2, and topped the Pioneers, 3-0, in the two matches.

In the five-set morning thriller against Ramapo, 23-25, 25-23, 28-26, 23-25, 20-18, Evans recorded 21 kills to lead all players in the match, to go along with six digs. He hit for a .306 percentage in the victory.

Freshman Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) posted a breakout performance for the Ducks, tallying 18 kills, 11 digs, four total blocks and a team-best three service aces. Fellow freshman Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out his second straight 50-plus assist effort with 58. Aeckerle also chipped in eight digs.

Juniors James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) and Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) controlled the net for the Ducks throughout the entirety of the match, combining for 12 blocks. Mataras turned back an impressive 10 kill attempts by the Roadrunners, and also added six kills and two aces, while Modestow registered two blocks and eight kills.

Classmate Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) came off the bench to add 11 kills, 11 digs and three total blocks in the victory over Ramapo.

In the sweep of Sacred Heart, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23, Evans was once again the difference maker in the match, hitting at a .448 clip with 18 kills. He also stuffed five kills and added five more digs.

Aeckerle split time with freshman Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) at the setter position and combined for 32 assists. Aeckerle led the way with 17 helpers and six digs, while Schlosser handed out 15.

Mataras and Modestow were forces to be reckoned with again at the net versus the Pioneers. Mataras compiled five kills and five blocks, while Modestow was nearly equal with five kills and four blocks.

Stevens will be back at home next weekend, February 11-12, for an action-packed two-day event, as it hosts the first round of UVC Crossover play. The Ducks will take to the court at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively on the 11th and at noon on the 12th. All 12 UVC member school will be in attendance on Castle Point.
