Men's Volleyball Posts 3-1 Mark During Florida Trip

(March 20, 2012) – On a two-day trip to Florida for spring break, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team, ranked seventh nationally, went 3-1 in four matches in Winter Park and Tampa on March 16 and 17. The Ducks beat Warner University in four sets, and then topped Johnson & Wales University-Denver and Endicott College in straight sets for their three victories. Stevens has currently won nine of its last 10 matches.

Over the four matches, sophomore outside hitter David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) led the Ducks with 42 kills and 27 digs. Evans highlighted his week with two 13-kill and nine-dig performances against Pfeiffer University and Endicott. Against Pfeiffer, he hit for a .344 percentage, while he hit at a .455 clip against Endicott. For the week, Evans hit .326 (11 errors, 95 attempts).

Freshman setter Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) eclipsed 100-plus assists over the four matches, finishing with 107 in 14 sets played. The freshman's best match came in the four set loss to Pfeiffer, when he dished out 40 assists and made eight digs. He then followed that match up with a 27-assist, nine-dig effort against Warner.

At the net, junior middle hitter Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) accumulated 23 total blocks and 16 kills. In the matches against Warner and JWU-Denver, Modestow totaled 17 blocks, with 10 coming against Warner.

Junior outside hitter Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) and sophomore outside hitter Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) combined for 70 kills, 25 digs and 21 blocks. Hannum hit .778 (seven kills, nine attempts) against Endicott with three digs, while Seifert's best match came against Pfeiffer with 15 kills, five digs and three blocks.

Stevens' other freshman setter, Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.), handed out 58 total assists and 18 digs. Against Warner, Schlosser 21 assists and four digs. Junior libero Ricky Budar (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded 23 digs from the back line in four matches.

The Ducks are back on the court tomorrow, March 21, when they cross the Hudson to play at No. 5 New York University for a United Volleyball Conference showdown at 7 p.m. If the Ducks win tomorrow night, they will clinch the regular season title for the UVC and will host the post season tournament on April 14 and 15.
