Men's Volleyball Earns Split at Hunter

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW YORK, N.Y.  (March 31, 2012) – The nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball split its matches at Hunter College on March 31 in New York City. Stevens lost two the Hawks in five sets but swept SUNY IT to post a 24-6 overall record on the season. The Ducks have two more matches before they partake in the United Volleyball Conference Championships on April 14-15 in New York.

In the five-set heartbreaker to Hunter, 25-15, 22-25, 26-28, 25-20, 18-20, the Ducks repeatedly hurt themselves at the service line, totaling 18 errors in the match. Freshman setter Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) put together a strong all-around performance in the setback, dishing out 31 assists to go along with 11 digs and three service aces.

Fellow freshman setter Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) contributed 32 assists and three digs in the loss.

Sophomore outside hitter David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) and junior outside hitter Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) combined for 38 kills and a hitting percentage of .333. Evans paced Stevens with 20 kills and chipped in seven digs, while Hannum posted 18 kills to going along with six digs and two blocks.

Junior and freshman middle hitters Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) and Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) each tallied nine kills, while Modestow led Stevens with six blocks.

Senior Wojciech Gajda (Woodside, N.Y.) led the back line for Stevens, tallying 15 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) chipped in 12 kills.

The Ducks as a team hit .342, compared to .232 for Hunter. Stevens also recorded 49 digs.

In the sweep over SUNY IT, 25-17, 25-6, 25-10, Aeckerle distributed 26 assists around the court to lead all players.

As a team, Stevens hit .403 in this match with 34 kills in 62 attempts with nine errors. Evans totaled the most kills with eight, while freshman middle hitter Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) registered six kills. Evans also added six digs.

The Ducks also recorded 13 total team blocks, including five from Smith, Bennett and freshman middle hitter Ryan Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.).

Stevens will be back at home for the first time in a month when it takes on Philadelphia Biblical University on April 4 at 6 p.m.
