MADISON, N.J. (April 3, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team split with Drew University on Tuesday afternoon, falling 2-0 in game one before mercy-ruling the Rangers 9-1 in game two. In that second contest, all 10 Duck players who stepped in the batter's box earned at least one hit in the game.

Game One

The Ducks and Rangers battled through five-and-a-half scoreless frames in the first game of the afternoon. Starters Kayla Berardi (Brookfield, Conn.) and Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) were each masterful in that time. Berardi struck out seven batters in her six innings of work, while D'Ornellas did not allow a single walk or hit batter during the course of her shutout.

Stevens third baseman Jamie DeGennaro (Pearl River, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 at the plate in game one to lead the Ducks offensively. Shortstop Danielle DeFeo (Andover, N.J.) and first baseman Stephanie Senkevich (Washington, N.J.) also had singles in the first game.

The Rangers finally broke through in the sixth inning, stringing two walks and three hits together to score two runs. Lexi Forsell (West Windsor, N.J.) and Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J.) had the RBI's for Drew and D'Ornellas pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the victory and the shutout.

Game Two

DeFeo singled and Kendel Aurand (McVeytown, Pa.) walked to begin the second game, and good two-out hitting by Senkevich drove in the Ducks' first run of the day and gave Stevens a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.

Stevens righty Brianna Sandone (Haddon Twp., N.J.) pitched a hitless and scoreless first, allowing the Ducks to add two more runs when Sarah Parker (Fredricksburg, Va.) singled, Noelle Mulligan (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled and Krista Sticco (Leonia, N.J.) came through with an RBI single to make the score 3-0 Ducks.

Drew got one unearned run in the second inning, and Sandone shut the Rangers down over the rest of the day. The freshman allowed just four hits and struck out one in six innings of work, allowing the Ducks to eventually build their lead up to mercy-rule levels.

Stevens got two more runs in the third, as Clair Strom (El Paso, Texas), Senkevich and Mulligan all had hits. Parker hit a sac fly in the frame and Mulligan's base knock was her second double of the contest.

In the fourth, DeFeo and Aurand got it started with singles, and Jordan had a two-out RBI hit to make the score 6-1.

The Ducks pulled ahead to the run-rule plateau in the sixth with help from a pinch-hit single by Jennifer Wojtys (Wallington, N.J.), going up by eight runs and giving Sandone the opportunity to end the game in the home half of the frame. The freshman gave up a two-out walk but that was it as she earned her fourth win of the year.
