Women’s Tennis Runs Record to 8-0 with 9-0 Win Over Houghton

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 4, 2013)
 – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team recorded its fifth shutout win of the season and fourth in five tries, trouncing visiting Houghton College by a score of 9-0 Friday to kick-off Homecoming 2013.
 
The Ducks did not drop a single set on the day and only fell in a total of 15 games while winning 96 of their own.
 
In doubles action to start the day, rolled 8-1, while juniors Danielle Stewart and Elena Cocineva-Lenge blanked Hannah Hale and Jennifer Iacurri. Closing out the third and final doubles point was Arden Servidio and Lily Bruenjes who rolled 8-3.
 
Bourque went 6-1, 6-0 over Bethany Chesetro to set the tone in singles, and Tessitore followed with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2.
 
Stewart finished a strong day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Molly Freihofer out of the third slot, and Elena Cocineva-Lenge tallied a victory 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lisa Jones at No. 4. Closing out the win was freshman Jillian Morneau and Bruenjes at five and six. Morneau eased past Hale, 6-1, 6-1, and Bruenjes earned the blank-sheet win to finish things off.
 
Up next for Stevens is Ithaca College and Elmira College on Sunday. The Ithaca match has been circled on the schedule since it was first released as the Bombers are the reigning Empire 8 champs and should provide Stevens its toughest test of the conference season. Ithaca is 6-0 in the Empire 8 and the Ducks are 5-0.
 
"We look forward to a very tough match Sunday vs. Ithaca but we're up for the challenge," Head Coach Steve Gachko said. "We're going to focus on a strong start in doubles and take it one match at a time."
 
The match vs. Ithaca will start at 10 a.m., while the match with Elmira begins at 2:30 p.m.
