No. 5 Men’s Volleyball Rolls to Sweep of Hunter and Stevenson; Win Streak up to Six Matches

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 16, 2013) – The nationally ranked No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team shutout both opponents in a home tri-match on Saturday in Canavan Arena, improving to 10-3 on the season. Stevens took down Hunter College in three sets and then swept No. 12 Stevenson University to push its winning streak to six consecutive matches.

In the opener against the Hawks (2-6), 25-19, 25-23, 25-18, sophomore Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) notched the only double-digit kills effort in the match with 10 in 17 attempts. Tyger was also the only player on both sides to go over 10 points with 13 of his own and also registered three blocks.

Senior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.), junior David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) and freshman Alexander Carpenter (Delaware, Ohio) each recorded five kills for the Ducks. Evans added two service aces and a block, while Carpenter hit .714 with two digs and two blocks.

Sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 21 assists to lead Stevens and also tallied a match-best three aces. Freshman John Eddins (Kula, Hawaii) stepped in for the final set and dished out five assists with one kill.

Junior Tyler Mackanin (Rocklin, Calif.) chipped in two aces.

As a team, the Ducks hit .348 in the match, including .591 in the third set (14K-1E-22A). Stevens also dominated from the service line with nine aces.

In the tilt between nationally ranked teams, the Ducks proved to be the stronger squad and handled Stevenson easily, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21.

Tyger once again paced Stevens with 12 kills to go along with three blocks. Evans also tallied 12 kills in the win with four digs.

Hannum narrowly missed out on double-digit kills with nine, but contributed seven digs. Eddins earned the start against the Mustangs and dished out 39 assists with four kills and four digs.

Freshman Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) recorded an impressive 14 digs in the three-set match. Vaughan played the first match as an outside hitter and compiled four kills and a solo block to end the second set.

Senior James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) was a force at the net with five kills in six attempts and led all players with four total blocks.

The Ducks will be back in action on February 20 at Bard College for a United Volleyball Conference match starting at 6 p.m. This match kicks off a string of 13-straight road games for Stevens before returning home on March 22.
