Two Wins for No. 6 Men’s Volleyball on Friday Night

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 22, 2013) – After over a month separation from Canavan Arena for the nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team, Stevens tallied two victories in a tri-match over No. 11 New York University and Cairn University on Friday night. The Ducks claimed a sweep over NYU in a United Volleyball Conference match and then topped Cairn, 3-1, to improve to 22-6 on the season and 10-1 in the UVC.

Stevens 3, NYU 0

In the opener over Hudson River rival NYU, the Ducks rolled to a sweep with set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-17. As a team, Stevens hit .392 and posted eight total blocks. Senior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) led all players with 10 kills and was the only hitter with double-digit kills in the match. Hannum hit .533 over the course of the three sets and added two digs and two blocks.

Stevens' best offensive performance came in the second set, as the team hit an impressive .577 with 17 kills in 26 attempts and just two errors. The Ducks led for the entirety of set one, with the exception of one tie, and only trailed in sets two and three after the opening points of each game.

Junior Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) chipped in nine kills and seven digs, while classmate David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) contributed eight kills and five digs with an ace.

Sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out a match-high 31 assists to go along with three digs and two blocks. Senior Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) was nearly perfect in kills with six in seven swings and also totaled six blocks.

Sophomore Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in five kills in nine attempts in the sweep of the Violets.

Stevens 3, Cairn 1

The Ducks seemed poised to complete a two-match sweep after winning the first two sets by 25-21 and 25-23 set scores, but the Highlanders bounced back in set three with a 25-21 win. Stevens answered with a 25-16 win to end the match in set four.

Stevens accumulated 11 service aces and 10 total blocks in the match. Cairn was nearly as impressive with 13 blocks and four aces but the Highlanders struggled with 10 receiving errors and hit just .205 to the Ducks' .246.

Evans hit at a .450 clip in the match with 11 kills and 20 attempts to pace Stevens offensively. Seifert was close behind with nine kills in 16 swings and added six digs with two blocks.

Sophomore Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) posted an all-around strong contest with eight kills, three digs, three blocks and two aces for the Ducks. Freshman Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) added eight digs and five kills.

Aeckerle once again led Stevens with 21 assists in two sets before being replaced by sophomore Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.), who totaled 20 assists with three digs.

Modestow wrapped up his evening with four more blocks and two kills, while Hannum closed out with eight kills and five digs.

The Ducks will be back in action on April 3 against second-ranked and defending national champion Springfield College at 6 p.m. in Hoboken for the final home match of the season.
