Evans Leads No. 6 Men’s Volleyball to 3-1 Win vs. DI Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (March 5, 2013) – The nationally ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team improved to 17-5 on the season with a 3-1 victory over NCAA Division I Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday night in the Golden Dome. This is the second win for Stevens against a DI opponent this season and the Ducks are 13-2 over the past 15 matches.

In the four-set triumph, 25-22, 25-15, 25-27, 25-23, junior David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) paced the Ducks with 18 kills in 35 attempts for a .486 hitting percentage. Evans also tallied four digs, two service aces and two total blocks. Evans totaled 21 points in the match.

Senior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) posted 14 kills with five digs and an ace, while sophomore Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) also eclipsed double-digit kills with 11 to go along with five digs and four blocks.

Sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out a match-high 40 assists and tallied four digs. Classmate Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) chipped in 11 assists in one set.

Defensively, sophomore Paul Dubuke (Camarillo, Calif.) and freshman Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) combined for 17 digs, while senior Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) registered five blocks. Dubuke posted nine digs and Vaughan added eight.

In the match, Stevens hit .325 compared to .172 for Rutgers-Newark. The Ducks also blcoked 16 kills attempts to just eight from the Scarlet Raiders.

Stevens heads to SUNY New Paltz this weekend for the final UVC Crossover of the season and will play three matches. On March 9, the Ducks take on Penn State Behrend at 9 a.m. and then square off with No. 1 Nazareth College at 1 p.m. The following day, Stevens and Hilbert take to the court at 11 a.m.
