ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 26, 2013)
– The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team ended its season this afternoon in the quarterfinals of NCAA Division III Championship to Baruch College in three sets. Fourth-seeded Baruch (34-5) nearly led from start to finish against No. 5 Stevens (25-10) and advanced to the semifinals where the Bearcats will take on No. 1 Springfield College at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

The Ducks fell behind early in the first set, 6-0, and had to use an early timeout to stop Baruch's momentum, but the strategy did not pay off as the Bearcats rolled to a 25-15 opening set victory. Stevens got as close as 9-5 in the set after a kill by sophomore Ian Tyger (York, Pa.), but Baruch answered with 10 of the next 15 points to build a 19-10 edge and went on to win the set from there.

Tyger led Stevens with 13 kills in 28 attempts with six digs and two blocks. Fellow sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out a team-high 28 assists to go along with three blocks and two digs to highlight the Ducks' top performers.

Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.), the third sophomore, recorded six total blocks, four kills and two service aces in the middle, while freshman Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) posted a team-best seven digs.

Stevens looked to figure things out in the second set and led up to a 7-7 tie, only to watch the Bearcats go on a 9-3 run and swing the set back to Baruch, 16-10. The Ducks forced Baruch to call a timeout after a quick four-point run brought the set back to 16-14, but the Bearcats would go on to prevail, 25-20.

In the third set, Baruch seized control from the start and led up to a 15-15 deadlock. The Ducks gained a brief lead after the tie and went up, 18-16, thanks to a block and back-to-back service aces by Bennett, but could only score three of the next 12 points and lost the final set, 25-21.

The Ducks awarded Baruch 38 points on errors (hitting, serving, receiving and ball handling) and hit just .200 in the match. In sets one and two, Stevens only hit .048 and .182.
