Men’s Volleyball Wraps Up Regular Season with Split at Baruch

NEW YORK, N.Y. (April 6, 2013) – The No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball finished up its regular season at Baruch College on Saturday and splits the tri-match with Baruch and York College (N.Y.). Stevens swept York in the opener but fell in four sets to the No. 7 Bearcats. The Ducks complete the 2013 regular season with a 23-8 record.

In the three-set sweep of York, 25-13, 25-17, 25-11, the Ducks hit .614 in the match with 39 kills and just four errors in 57 attempts. Stevens went a perfect 15-for-15 in set one and five players also posted perfect hitting percentages.

Senior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) tallied a team-high six kills in six tries in two sets. Junior David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) also recorded six kills and also scored five service aces in two games.

Junior Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) senior James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) and sophomore Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) all hit at a 1.000 clip in at least three kill attempts. Seifert went 5-for-5, while Mataras and Bennett were each 3-for-3. Senior Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) put down his only kill attempt in the match.

Sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) dished out 29 assists, while freshman John Eddins (Kula, Hawaii) handed out six assists to go along with four blocks. Sophomore Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) hit .714 in two sets with five kills in seven swings.

In the regular season finale loss to Baruch, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, Seifert was the lone Duck to eclipse double-digit kills with 10. He also led Stevens with five digs.

Hannum, Modestow and Bennett all compiled seven kills in the loss. Bennett hit .500 in the match and also chipped in three blocks. Hannum also added five digs with two blocks.

Evans finished his afternoon with nine kills, while Aeckerle tied the match-high with 43 helpers.

Stevens registered 47 kills in the loss, compared to 49 from Baruch. The big difference in the match was 17 service errors by the Ducks to just nine by the Bearcats.

Up next on the schedule for Stevens is the United Volleyball Conference tournament at Nazareth College. Stevens takes on Elmira College on April 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
