Hoboken, N.J. (September 21, 2013) – Fifth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (5-1-1) dropped a 1-0 men's soccer match to Houghton College Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
Houghton received the game-winner from freshman midfielder
Mitch Beattie (Maitland, Ontario) in the 37th minute. On the play, Duck goalkeeper
Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) was able to thwart a solid Highlander cross, diving and punching the ball to the top of the box. Beattie was there to control it, eventually getting a clean look and putting his shot in the left side of the goal for the marker.
That 1-0 margin remained the rest of the way, holding up to give Houghton (5-0-1) the upset victory over the previously unbeaten Ducks.
Stevens was able to generate countless scoring chances, hitting the post twice, the cross bar once and being denied by a trio of brilliant saves by freshman goalkeeper
Jacob Dunnett (Quispamsis, New Brunswick). In the final moments, the Ducks generated a strong cross and shot that hammered off the crossbar, and then on a corner, Dunnett was able to deny a header from senior back
Zeke Hemme (Lousville, Ky.) with a tough save.
Stevens ended with a 20-8 advantage in shots and a 14-5 edge in corners, controlling the field and possession for the better part of the final 45 minutes, but the Ducks were unable to find the equalizer. Killian made two saves in the loss, with Dunnett tallying four denials.
Stevens will visit Alfred University next Saturday, September 28, at 1 p.m. in an Empire 8 showdown. Houghton faced Point Park College Wednesday.
