EDGEWATER, N.J. (October 19, 2014) – Despite taking an early lead after doubles, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team fell to Ithaca College 5-3 Saturday in the Empire 8 Conference Championship match.
 
The loss was the first of the season for Stevens as its season closes at 11-1. The win moved Ithaca's record to 10-1.
 
Senior Danielle Stewart and freshman Katrina Guido bounced back from their first loss of the season in yesterday's semifinal with a win at second doubles to give the Ducks the early lead. The Stevens duo grabbed hold of an early 3-2 lead and held it throughout before pulling away for the 8-3 win. Ithaca evened up the score with an 8-6 win at No. 3, but the Ducks rebounded with a win at No. 1.
 
Finding themselves down 3-6, senior Jessica Bourque and junior Alexis Connor rallied to take the next three games to tie the score at six. With the win in reach, the Ducks pair responded with two more wins to take the match 8-6 to give Stevens the 2-1 edge heading into singles.
 
Ithaca rebounded with a win at No. 3 for senior Allison Vizgaitis over junior Julia Guignard, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 for senior Alyssa Steinweis over Guido. Bourque got the Ducks back on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, but Ithaca took the win at No. 2 before clinching the match at No. 6 with sophomore Maddie Overholt's 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win over sophomore Allie Masciana.
 
The loss ends a highly successful season for the Ducks as they captured the regular season conference title for the second time in four years, and handed Ithaca its first conference loss since 2011.
