Gabe Shankweiler (Allentown, Pa.) combined for 39 points to lead the No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a four-set victory over Vassar College in United Volleyball Conference action on Wednesday night.
Stevens (5-3, 4-1) dropped the first set to Vassar (2-6, 1-4), 26-24, but bounced back and rolled through the next three sets, 25-13, 25-15, 25-20, to tally its fourth consecutive win of the season. The Ducks hit .347 in the match and posted 13 total blocks, compared to a .101 hitting percentage and seven blocks from the Brewers.
Despite the close first set loss, Stevens outhit Vassar, .393 to .333, and put down one more kill, 15 to 14. The Ducks then registered 10 more kills in set two, 16 to six, with a .419 hitting clip to .000 for Vassar.
Neither team performed particularly well offensive in set three, as Stevens finished with 10 kills and six errors, but the Brewers only scored on four kills and committed 10 errors. In the clincher, the Ducks put together their best set of the match with 15 kills and two errors for a .433 clip, Vassar finished the set with a .296 hitting percentage on 13 kills and five errors.
Vaughan paced all players with 18 kills on 30 swings and just three errors for an impressive .500 hitting percentage. He also added eight digs and three blocks. Shankweiler registered 15 kills and five total blocks.
Junior
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) dished out a match-high 47 assists to go along with a match-best 15 digs. Fellow junior
Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) added 11 digs from the back row with four digs.
Sophomore
Alexander Carpenter (Delaware, Ohio) posted a .727 hitting percentage with eight kills on 11 swings and added four blocks.
Junior
Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore
Thomas Wright (La Mesa, Calif.) each recorded six kills. Smith hit .385 overall and led all players with seven blocks, while Wright chipped in eight digs.
Stevens return home this weekend for a tri-match against No. 14 Stevenson University and Hunter College on February 15. The Ducks take on Stevenson at 11 a.m. in Canavan Arena and then square off with Hunter at 3 p.m.
