CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 8, 2014) – The nationally ranked No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept Penn State Behrend and Hilbert College in the opening day of the first United Volleyball Conference crossover at MIT on Saturday.
With the pair of victories, Stevens evens its record at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the UVC.
Stevens 3, Penn State Behrend 0
The Ducks took down Behrend, 25-23, 25-18, 31-29, to begin the day and outhit the Lions, .340 to .175. Stevens also tallied 10 blocks as a team, compared to just two for Behrend.
Sophomore
Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) paced all players with 12 kills in 29 attempts and added four digs with two blocks. Freshman
Gabe Shankweiler (Allentown, Pa.) put down 11 kills in 21 swings with no errors for a .524 hitting percentage and notched a double-double with a team-high 12 digs.
Junior
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 24 assists in the win and added six digs, while classmate
Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) swung at a .600 clip with seven kills in 10 tries to go along with five total blocks.
Freshman
Scott Russell (Newport Beach, Calif.) dished out nine assists in one set played, while sophomore
John Eddins (Kula, Hawaii) picked up six assists, three digs, three kills and two blocks in one set.
Sophomore
Thomas Wright (La Mesa, Calif.) chipped in six kills in the opener and junior
Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) added seven digs.
Stevens 3, Hilbert 0
The Ducks rolled past Hilbert, 25-15, 25-12, 25-17, to conclude the first day of conference play and hit an impressive .442 in the match. Hilbert was held to a negative hitting percentage at -.091. Six players for Stevens hit at least .316 in the contest. The Ducks were once again a force at the net with 15 total blocks.
Vaughan once again notched a match-best 13 kills and hit .524 overall with four digs and five blocks. Shankweiler and sophomore
Derrick Sokol (Newbury Park, Calif.) both registered eight kills, while Shankweiler hit .316 and Sokol swung at a .538 percentage.
The setting trio of Aeckerle, Russell and Eddins combined for 38 assists. Russell led the way with 14, while Aeckerle and Eddins both accounted for 12 each.
Sophomore
Alexander Carpenter (Delaware, Ohio) tallied 11 block assists in the win with five kills in seven swings and classmate
Ayal Ciobotaru (Cedarhurst, N.Y.) led the Ducks with seven digs.
